Heated Wiper Park Area: Order the Right Windscreen First Time

UK glass shops: a heated wiper park area changes the windscreen part. Spot the wiper rest heating, run the VIN, and order eurocode + OE first time.

Quick takeaway

A heated wiper park area is a band of heating along the bottom of the windscreen, where the wiper blades rest, so they don't freeze to the glass. It's an option on the screen itself, often with its own connector, and it can mean a different ARGIC eurocode and OE part number from the same screen without it. Don't order by model and year. Run the VIN, put eurocode and OE on the PO, and check the bottom edge and connectors of the delivered glass against the old screen before it comes out.

What a heated wiper park area is

The wiper park area (also called the wiper rest area) is the strip at the bottom of the windscreen where the blades sit when they're switched off. On cars with a heated wiper park area, that strip has its own heating: very fine wires in the laminate or a printed element near the lower edge, fed through small connector tabs. In cold weather it stops the blades freezing to the glass and helps clear ice and snow that builds up at the base of the screen. It's usually part of a winter or cold-climate pack, so two cars of the same model can have different screens.

It isn't the same as a fully heated windscreen, where heating covers the whole viewing area. For fully heated and acoustic screens, see heated and acoustic windscreen eurocode. For the full map of options that split one model into several parts, read types of windscreen. This page covers the wiper area only, and what to check before you order.

Why heated wiper area screens get ordered wrong

The heated band is easy to miss, and that's why it causes returns. Three shortcuts cause most of them:

  • Ordering by model and year — the heated wiper area is often an option or part of a pack, so the same model and year can have a screen with it and one without it.
  • Looking only at the mirror area — shops check the camera bracket and rain sensor first. The wiper area sits under the scuttle panel and wiper arms, so the wires and tabs are often hidden until the trim comes off.
  • Mixing it up with a fully heated screen — “heated screen” on a job card can mean full heating, wiper area heating, or both. Each can be a different part with different connectors.

A single option like this can change the code on an otherwise identical screen. To see how the code captures those options, read ARGIC eurocode explained, then let the VIN tell you which version the car left the factory with.

Heated wiper area combinations to confirm

These are the combinations that most often catch shops out on the same model:

  • Wiper area heating only — a plain or tinted screen with a narrow heated band at the bottom and connector tabs near the lower edge. From the cabin it can look like a standard screen.
  • Fully heated screen with wiper area heating — heating across the viewing area plus the wiper rest band, sometimes on separate circuits with separate connectors. Put both IDs on the PO; see OE part number vs eurocode for how the eurocode and OE work together.
  • Wiper area heating with camera, sensor and acoustic options — the heated band can sit on a screen that also has a camera bracket, rain sensor or acoustic interlayer. Every option has to match, not just the heating. Read ADAS windscreen identification for the camera-side checks.

The eurocode describes the full combination, so treat the heated wiper area as one more reason to confirm the code. A screen without it may fit the aperture perfectly and still leave the customer's wipers frozen to the glass on the first cold morning.

Shop path: VIN → eurocode + OE → check the glass → fit

Identification is the shop's job. Stock and delivery are the wholesaler's. Keep that split clear and the heated wiper area stops being a surprise in the bay.

A clean path looks like this:

  1. Capture a clean 17-character VIN — from the V5C, the base of the windscreen or the door pillar. Watch the O/0 and I/1 traps. Use the VIN 17 characters checklist if photos or OCR are messy.
  2. Run a glass VIN lookup — get the orderable ARGIC eurocode and OE/OEM part number for the screen actually fitted to that vehicle, including whether it has wiper area heating.
  3. Put both IDs on the PO — eurocode for aftermarket and wholesaler stock, OE when you buy through a dealer channel. Add one-time clips, scuttle fixings or mouldings to the same order.
  4. Check the delivered glass, then fit — match the label and the marking in the corner to the eurocode, then compare the bottom edge, heating band and connector tabs with the old screen before you cut it out. After fitting, test the heating before the car leaves.

Registration plate / VRM: customers usually give you the reg first. Plate-based identification is coming soon on AutoglassPortal. Until then, note the reg on the job card and use the VIN to identify the glass.

Scope: this guide covers windscreens only, not side, rear or roof glass, and is written for UK glass repair shops and windscreen companies ordering from wholesalers.

For the full VIN → part number workflow, see windscreen part number lookup by VIN.

Other options near the wiper area

The rain and light sensor sits higher up behind the mirror, but it often comes on the same cold-climate cars as the heated wiper area. If the old screen has a sensor pad, check rain sensor windscreen before you order, so the new screen has the right pad and bracket too.

Some heated and solar control screens use a coating rather than visible wires, so the heating isn't obvious at a glance. Solar coatings can also leave a clear patch for toll tags and phone signal. See solar control windscreen for how to confirm a coated screen before the order goes in.

Common heated wiper area mistakes

  • Writing “heated screen” on the PO with no eurocode or OE, so the wholesaler has to guess which heating is meant.
  • Checking the mirror area only and missing the wires and connector tabs hidden under the scuttle panel.
  • Fitting a screen without wiper area heating on a car that had it, then getting a call back on the first frosty morning.
  • Forgetting that the lower edge finish is part of the part number: an encapsulated screen with a moulded bottom trim is a different part from plain glass. See encapsulated windscreen eurocode.
  • Damaging or forgetting to reconnect the wiper area connector when the new screen goes in, then not testing the heating before handover.
  • Not recording the eurocode and OE number on the job, so nobody can trace which windscreen was fitted if the customer comes back.

A repeatable workflow for the desk and the bay

Put identification before the phone call to the wholesaler, not after the glass arrives:

  1. Job booked → capture the VIN (note the reg on the card; the VIN still drives the glass ID).
  2. Office or van tablet → VIN lookup → eurocode + OE on the PO → clips and fixings added.
  3. Wholesaler confirms stock against those IDs → glass arrives labelled with the same codes.
  4. Bay check → compare the heating band and connectors with the old screen → fit → test the heating → ADAS calibration when required → codes saved on the job.

AutoglassPortal is built for that VIN → eurocode + OE step. See what AutoglassPortal is and the VIN to eurocode API if you want the same lookup inside your own job management or quoting software.

Brand pages when the VIN is already known

Once you have the VIN, brand hubs help with model context. Start from the windscreen brand index, including BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes. Still order on eurocode and OE, not on the badge alone.

FAQ

What is a heated wiper park area on a windscreen?
It's a heated band along the bottom of the windscreen, where the wiper blades rest when switched off. Fine wires or a printed element warm that strip so the blades don't freeze to the glass and ice clears faster at the base of the screen.
Does a heated wiper area change the windscreen eurocode?
It can. The ARGIC eurocode describes the full combination of options on the screen, so the same model can have one code with wiper area heating and another without it. That's why the VIN, not the model name, should drive the order.
How can I tell if a car has a heated wiper park area?
Look for fine horizontal wires or a printed band along the bottom edge and small connector tabs near the lower corners, often hidden under the scuttle panel. Don't rely on looks alone: run the VIN to get the eurocode and OE, then compare the delivered glass with the old screen.
Is a heated wiper area the same as a heated windscreen?
No. A fully heated windscreen has heating across the viewing area. A heated wiper park area only heats the strip where the blades rest. Some screens have both, sometimes on separate circuits, and each combination can be a different part.
Can I fit a screen without wiper area heating instead?
It's a risk. The screen may fit the aperture, but the car loses a function it was built with, the connector is left unused, and the customer will notice on the first frosty morning. Order the same part the vehicle left the factory with.
Where do UK shops look up the windscreen eurocode from a VIN?
Use a glass-level VIN tool that returns the ARGIC eurocode and OE for that windscreen. AutoglassPortal is built for that step, so you can put both codes on the PO before you call the wholesaler.
